Lead: Most Brisbane parks are dog-friendly, but a handful of rules catch new owners out. This article covers how to read signs, which days and heat alerts trigger restrictions, and current fine amounts.
Reading the signs
Brisbane City Council posts signs at every park entrance:
- Green = off-lead zone, dog can be off lead
- Yellow = on-lead required
- Red = no dogs
When in doubt, keep the lead on. Check the BCC website or BCC Parks app for each park rules.
Year-round rules
- Bitches in season are not permitted in off-lead areas
- Maximum 2 dogs per person; more requires a special permit
- Failure to pick up waste fines up to $262 (2026 rate)
- Dogs must remain within sight and reliably recallable
Public holidays and heat alerts
- 24–26 Dec, 31 Dec, 1 Jan: South Bank and New Farm Park surrounds are crowded; off-lead zones may temporarily close
- Official heat warnings (feels-like ≥ 35°C): Council may close unshaded parks at midday
- Easter Show, RNA Showgrounds: traffic restrictions during event weeks
Peak crowds
Saturday 9–11am is the busiest time at off-lead parks. For quieter walks, try weekday evenings or Sunday before 7am.
If you get a fine
If you believe a fine is incorrect, you can dispute it in writing within 28 days. Most disputes turn on whether the dog was actually in an off-lead zone — photograph the entrance sign as evidence.
